How To Install A 7 Day Programmable Thermostat
Installing a 7 day programmable thermostat is not a difficult task, especially if you have had experience dealing with wiring or other electrical installations.
I will say however, if you’re not great with your hands and this is your first time trying to do anything like this at all, I’d highly suggest hiring a pro to help you install your 7 day programmable thermostat.
It’s not something you want to tinker with and get wrong. As with all things electrical, there is always the chance of getting shocked and quite badly.

If you hire a professional to install your 7 day programmable thermostat, I suggest making sure they are a reputable qualified electrician and not just a general handy man.
Now if you want to do this yourself, here are the steps and tools you will need to take and use to get the job done.
How To Install A 7 Day Programmable Thermostat
The tools you will need are as follows….
* Your 7 day programmable thermostat
* Drill/Driver
* Sharp pencil
* Level
* Screwdriver
* Tape
It’s really important that you read the instructions on the box of your 7 day programmable thermostat before installing anything. I know we all hate to read instructions, but it’s important.
While these instructions should work for you, sometimes different manufacturers have different ways to install certain components so make sure you read the instructions carefully first.
So here are the general steps….
1) Make sure to turn off the power to the thermostat. (Very important)
2) Remove the old 7 day programmable thermostat and the wall plate it came with. Some of the older 7 day programmable thermostats had mercury in them, so be careful with any glass tubes and dispose of it all legally and safely.
3) Make sure you label all the wires in your system and take careful note of where they were attached on to in your old 7 day programmable thermostat. You can ignore the color of the wire as indications, just use the letter designations to help you to identify the wire types.
Make sure to secure any wires to stop them from moving and falling back into the wall where you will have a hard time trying to recover them. (And it’s dangerous)
Tie them into a loop or my favorite way is to secure them to the wall with easy to peel off tape.
4) Install the new wall plate if your new 7 day programmable thermostat came with one. You may or may not need to drill holes to secure the plate into the wall.
Make sure you use a level to make sure all holes are level. Use drywall anchors if you have them.
5) Now you need to match each of the labeled wires with the same letter designation on your new 7 day programmable thermostat and connect them.
Make sure to connect these wires as you are told to do by the instructions that came with your 7 day programmable thermostat. This is why I said to read the instructions for your 7 day programmable thermostat first.
Follow the instructions to the letter and install any batteries that are needed to be installed to get your 7 day programmable thermostat working properly.
6) Now mount the unit to the wallplate.
7) Turn the power back on to your 7 day programmable thermostat and follow the instructions on how to program it.
